Botswana is bordered by South Africa to the east and south, by Zimbabwe to the north-east, by the Caprivi strip to the north and by Namibia to the west. It is a vast tableland of which 84% is covered by Kalahari sands. In the east are some attractive hill ranges and sand rivers which slope down to the Limpopo. The 16 835 sq. km Okavango Delta in the north-west floods annually, creating thousands of waterways and well wooded islands. The Chobe River follows the northern boundary and fronts the Chobe National Park. True dessert occurs only in the extreme south-west and is home to some of the few remaining nomadic Bushmen.

The remainder of the Kalahari sandveld consists of gently undulating country covered by open grassland, savannah and scrub interspersed with occasional outcrops of limestone.

Our journey in April 1999 to Namibia via the Caprivi, took us through Botswana and we thought that we will visit two places of interest as we had planned only two nights in Botswana. But it turn out to be four nights!

Our journey to Drotsky's Cave and Tsodilo Hills started at the Parr's Halt border post and ended at the Botswana/Caprivi border post at Mohembo. On our way back home from Namibia, we crossed the border at Buitepos now called Trans Kalahari, via the Trans Kalahari Highway to Pioneer Gate at Lobatse.
